In a nutshell: IRS whistleblowers have alleged that the Department of Justice “obstructed” a criminal investigation into Hunter Biden in various ways, ultimately saving him from more serious charges. But it also covered up President Joe Biden’s involvement in Hunter’s business dealings with CEFC China Energy as vice president, according to the whistleblowers. The company was so deeply connected to the Chinese government that it acted as an extension of it.

Leveraging his father: Hunter sent a threatening text message to CEFC employee Henry Zhao for not paying him on time, saying, “I am sitting here with my father, and we would like to understand why the commitment has not been fulfilled.” He warned that he would make use of “the man sitting next to” him “and every person he knows.” Hunter’s bank accounts received $5.1 million from Zhao days later.

The DOJ blocked questions: The testimony described an FBI interview in which Hunter’s business partner said that Hunter arranged multiple meetings between then-vice president Biden and CEFC. When investigators wanted to ask about Hunter saving part of a deal with CEFC “for the big guy,” a DOJ attorney repeatedly told them not to. This made even the FBI frustrated, according to the testimony.

“I don't want to talk about the big guy. I don't want to ask about Dad… Don't ask about the big guy,” the prosecutor allegedly said.

Things are heating up: Attorney General Merrick Garland put David Weiss, a Donald Trump appointee, in charge of the Hunter Biden investigation and promised Congress there would be no improper “interference.” But in light of these serious allegations, Republicans are demanding answers, and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.) is thinking about impeaching Garland. Suspicions increased after a leaked email showed Weiss telling other DOJ staff that he didn’t have the authority to decide charges in the investigation.
